Why I’m leaving 1and1 (1&1) (aka 1and1 sucks)

So I’ve been with 1and1 for the last 5 years and they were pretty good up until recently. It seems they’re overloading all their servers and not caring about it. (For those that know what this means, I SSH in and look at the server loads and the server is usually reporting load averages in the 80-100.0 range)

I’ve tried numerous times to get them to move me to a new server or to find the offending sites and keep their server loads under control. Their typical response is, “We can pull your site up within 2-3 seconds so all appears to be well on our end”

Just today, I tried to pull up my site and look at the screenshot of the following load times:

1and1 slow load time

In case the image isn’t clear, it took my site 18.8 seconds to load; that is utterly unacceptable! You should also be able to notice that anything NOT hosted by 1and1 (those not coming from creanium.net) is what’s loaded so quickly. The Flickr photos only took about 150-200ms each, whereas a simple 275 BYTE image took 5.51 seconds to load from my 1and1-hosted server. I’m quite happy to be paying for my 50 byte-per-second hosting service.

I’ve decided to let my wallet do the talking and I’m leaving 1and1. I’m also taking 2 other hosting packages with me that I had set up with 1and1 and I will steer all future customers far away from 1and1.

I’m currently looking for a new hosting provider so if anyone has any recommendations, I’m open to ideas.

1and1 Internet sucks!! They have no customer service and for the price you pay I guess one shouldnt expect any. I suggest to all that you pay a little more for what you deserve! 1and1 Internet will get you somehow someway even if you are unaware at the moment. No one at the company would give me any logical answer, not even the supervisors. Their so called complaint department never even got back to me, what type of customer service is that!?

I spoke to a 1and 1 technical services rep in April 2009 to cancel my account. I was led to believe that the account was canceled. I received no other communication. On Dec. 14, 2009 I received a collection letter from their NCO financial systems stating that I owed 1 and 1 $23.94 and $18.95. I called 1and1, they said my account was not fully closed, only the domain was canceled- not the hosting. I told them I had requested both (and why would I still host if the domain was canceled). Then they told me they sent me ONE email in October to let me know that I owed money. I did not receive this email. They did not send an invoice by mail, call me (they have my phone number) or attempt to contact me in any other way. The 1and1 sales representative acknowledged that I did cancel my domain in April, but hosting was not canceled. I said that when I communicated with Tech Services, I was led to believe that both had been canceled. Next she said that if I paid the collection company, then they would pro-rate back my refund based on the cancelation date. However, I still would have to pay the $18.95 late fee. Then they transferred me to NCO to make the payment over the phone, I found out that I had to pay another $8 to pay via credit card over the phone to ensure that the bill would not be reported to the credit agencies. I had been told by 1and1 that I would not be reported to the credit bureauy and that I had 30 days to pay this bill. 1and1 mislead me again & it cost me a total of $50.89.

I thought at first some of these horror stories about 1and1 were made up but 1and1 really is that bad but I think they only scratch the surface and I steer my clients away from them at all costs. I have personally see them bill people for $100's of dollars of domains even after they got emails saying auto renewal was turned off and even got an email saying that they were turned off and then when they were disputed, they shut down the accounts and in two cases, high level domains were lost. It is a real racket. I know that I personally spoke with the customer support well over a 20 times and sent off numerous emails and requested to have a supervisor call me and they never did. I think they are based out of the Philippines or something. The got me for several hundred dollars and I lost over a dozen domains that I could have sold for a couple of grand not to mention all of the time wasted. And I went through the same shake down with getting billed for services after I requested them to stop and then shutting down sites, even though it was their fault. The best one was after I thought I had it taken care of part of the nightmare. I went to transfer a domain and found out someone else now owned it. I was furious and emailed them (calling them is totally useless unless you record the calls and even then you just get a run around) they said that they had sent several notices via email about turning off services and putting several domains back into the pool, Now mind yout I had thought I had taken care of this a few months ago. . I asked them how I was supposed to get those emails since they suspended the domain they were emailing too? Just totally irresponsible and utterly stupid things like that. It was a horror story is all I have to say. As far as recommended hosting service, I have been using Bluehost. They actually speak English and call you back and know what they are doing. It is a real pleasure after dealing with the numb nuts over at 1and1. Seriously in my humble opinion.. 1and1 really and truly does suck...

THIS IS A CALL TO THE WHOLE INTERNET - 1AND1 CONTINUES THEIR FRAUDULENT ACTIVITIES WITH THE TACIT ACCEPTANCE OF ICANN. EVERYONE, LETS FLOOD ICANN WITH DEMANDS TO REVOKE 1AND1'S REGISTRAR STATUS. In my case, the put my account into collections, damaging my credit, without a single note of warning. My account was hooked up to PayPal, which was well funded, but I needed to "update my paypal permission" or something, which I already did a few months back, and which they DIDN'T give me any notice for.
