I Don’t Get CBS …

Maybe I’m spoiled by the fact that Channel 4 showed over 100 Padres games in HD this year, or that the Chargers opened the season on Monday Night Football, but I am absolutely floored by the fact that this Sunday’s Chargers vs Ravens game will not be shown in HD on CBS. And believe me, I’m not alone. Here you have two undefeated teams, both with absolutely stellar defenses, and numerous sports reporters and analysts listing this as one of their top games to watch this week. With so much on the line in this game and so much national interest, why did CBS decide that this game was not worth the effort and resources to broadcast in HD? Let’s take a look at the map of CBS games broadcasting at 10:00AM (PDT):

CBS Week 4 NFL Games

  • Blue covers the regions where the Chargers vs Ravens game will be seen
  • Red covers the regions where the Colts vs Jets game will be seen (in HD)
  • Green covers the regions where the Dolphins vs Texans game will be seen

Using that map, we can see that, geographically speaking, the Chargers game is broadcast over a much larger area. So that would be one argument in favor of broadcasting that game in HD instead of the Colts vs Jets game. Another argument here is what I’ve said already, we’re talking about two very strong undefeated teams with dynamic defenses and the best running back in the league on the Chargers. Whereas in the one HD game they are broadcasting in the morning, the Colts at the Jets, you have one great team (Colts) playing a somewhat mediocre team (the Jets). The Jets have one of the worst defenses in the league with which Peyton Manning should have no trouble owning. Not to mention that this game isn’t even a divisional matchup. Okay, you can argue that the Charges and Ravens aren’t in a divisional matchup either, but I’d all but guarantee more people are interested in seeing this bitter battle between two strong contenders than watch what should be a pretty one-sided game. I think a bigger question here is why does CBS only cover three NFL games in HD each week when Fox is able to cover six games in HD? I doubt it’s a money issue seeing as how CBS is currently the most successful of the networks. Is it Infrastructure? Well if so, then find out what Fox is doing right because they’re walking all over you when it comes to sports in HD. I used to really like CBS’ NFL coverage, but right now they are definitely leaving much to be desired. Oh well, I can look forward to next week when the Steelers come to San Diego to play on NBC Sunday Night Football. At least that way we’re guaranteed to see it in HD …

I’m So White and Nerdy

So “Weird” Al Yankovic has a new album coming out next week called “Straight Outta Lynwood”. The title is a parody of the N.W.A. album “Straight Outta Compton”, although it is probably also a nod to the popularity of subsequent “Straight Outta _______” rap album titles. It’s his first new album in 3 years, and if his lead single is any indication, it should be a good album.

He released the video for his lead single, “White and Nerdy”, on Monday of this week and after watching it, it hits me that the video is so painfully similar to my own life that it might as well be my autobiography. It’s a hilarious video, don’t get me wrong, but it might as well be about me (okay maybe with a few exceptions, I don’t play D&D haha).

Anyway, check out the video below, I’m sure you’ll get a kick out of it.

Don’t Stop Believing

Wow. I just got back from the Journey and Def Leppard concert and it, was, AWESOME. I went with Mary, Brian, Ikaika, Liza, and a couple of Ikaika’s friends. Being two big bands from the 80’s, Mary, Brian and I decided to go all out and go 80’s for the concert.

So, of course I sported the mullet and Pantera t-shirt. Earlier in the day we did some shopping and Mary picked up a Guns n’ Roses t-shirt to wear. She busted out the Aqua Net and after a half hour of teasing, she was ready to roll with the big hair and heavy eyeliner on.

You wouldn’t believe how many people complimented me on my mullet. People would walk by at Coors Amphitheater and say, “NICE MULLET MAN!” or “ROCK ON! MULLETS RULE!”. There were even a few people there that wanted to take a picture with me. I didn’t expect that kind of reaction to it, but I guess people really appreciated it.

The tickets said the concert started at 7:30, we got there about 7:15 but was just planning on skipping the opening act. But this was the first concert I’ve ever gone to where when the ticket says 7:30, the good part of the show actually starts at 7:30. Journey went on the stage right at 7:30 and so we ran up to are seats and sang along and had a great time for the hour and a half that Journey played.

There was about a 20 minute gap between Journey and Def Leppard. Def Leppard took the stage and even though I didn’t know very many of their songs, I still had a BLAST. They knew how to rock and they just put on a great show.

As always I have pics up in the Journey/Def Leppard Concert Photo Album. Now let’s see if we go to the Aerosmith and Motley Crue show on November 9th …

Panic! at the Disco

Just got back from the Panic! at the Disco concert that was held down at SOMA. WOW, do they put on a show. Some may have found it weird and rather obscure, but I thought it was pretty cool and definitely entertaining.

It started out with three actors (a man and two women) and they were all dressed in costumes that reminded me a lot of something straight out of Moulin Rouge. Anyway, the actors came out first and the band followed them in. Then the male actor introduced the band and they went right into it. The actors appeared throughout the night acting out scenes and dances during some of the other songs.

The lighting and the stage actors all came out pretty well. It’s like I told Courtney earlier in the night, I forget how little of a show most the bands I see put on until I see a show actually being put on.

They played great and sounded GREAT, espcially since they were live. All their songs are very complex and utilize many different instruments. At any given time, there was at least 1 guitar, a bass, an interesting small drumset, at least 2 keyboards, and a cello. There were a few other random instruments brought in, but those were the bare minimums they played.

Panic! only has one album out right now, so they played every song off of the album, as well as two covers. One was a Radiohead cover, the other was Smashing Pumpkin’s Tonight Tonight, which they did a great job with both.

After the concert we all went out for some food at the Studio Diner in Kearny Mesa. It was a great night and I had a blast. Now it’s definitely time for bed!

Wide awake

It’s almost 5:30AM and I’m wide awake. I see daylight starting to show outside. I think it has something to do with going to the Reel Big Fish concert tonight. I seem to have inherited my dad’s reaction to performing physical activities at night. For some reason, whenever I do any strenuous activities (like going to the gym or going to a concert) after 7:00PM or so, I seem to have a lot of trouble sleeping that night. This normally wouldn’t be a huge problem except I have to be up at 8:00 to help Erica’s mom pick up a new screen door. I’m debating just staying up all night at this point and worrying about sleeping tomorrow night. I think it’s all dependent on how tired I feel in the next 3 hours and how bored I get. Ahh well.

The concert was pretty good, I’ve been to better RBF concerts before, but this in no way was a bad concert. I just know in the past they’ve been a bit more enthusiastic and into the show. Tonight just seemed a little below their usual performances. Don’t get me wrong, I had a blast tonight; the most fun I’ve had in a while. Josh, Jacki, Erica and myself all hung out on the floor while Brian and his boss and his boss’ girlfriend stayed on the balcony above the stage and watched the show from there. During a couple songs Josh and I went into the pit, and then for the last song, Sell Out, Jacki and I went in the pit and tore it up. I think it was my excursions into the pit that are causing my insomnia because that’s where I was really active. Oh and this girl behind us somehow injured her leg. She was laying on the ground, grabbing her knee and screaming. I looked at her left leg and her foot was pointing 90 degrees outward so I’m thinking she somehow dislocated her knee. It took about 10 minutes for the paramedics to get there but they came down in an elevator with a stretcher and hauled her away. Other than that, it was just a typical concert.

I don’t think there’s much else to talk about at this point, I’m pretty sure I covered most everything in yesterday’s post.

UPDATE: It is now 11:30AM and I decided to just stay up the rest of the morning, so now, having been awake for 25 1/2 hours, I’m going to sleep for a few hours. Man I’m all screwed up.

Ahhh, Sundays

Just got home from church and lunch with my parents. Had a caesar salad and a margarita and now I’m all ready for a nap.

Leaving for a concert at Mt. Carmel in about 45 minutes. The Marine Corps band is performing in the gym, so it should be pretty fun.

Had dinner at my brother’s last night for Gaile’s birthday. It was pretty fun; had some great food too. Gaile got Dance Dance Revolution for her birthday and so I decided to try it out and it’s harder than it looks. Gaile’s brother was too cool to try it so I was the only one that even attempted it.

Then I went to Josh’s to play Halo 2 and Erica came over shortly after I got there and we played some Halo, then watched SNL. All in all it was just a fun relaxing evening and today is shaping up to be the same. There’s a special shopping deal going on today up at the North County Fair Mall that starts at 6, so Brian, Courtney, and I are headed up there to do some shopping. We’ll see what I come home with.

K, it’s definitely time for a nap.

Lotsa updates

Alrighty … so some new stuff to post about. (I would hope so considering it’s been 3 months since my last one).

Okay, well since the last thing I posted about was my new sway bar, I’ll start out by talking about the car. Since the sway bar was put on, I got a new suspension installed. Nothing too fancy, just something that lowered the car a little bit and improved the handling, but didn’t make the ride too harsh. In case anyone is interested, I have Vogtland Sport springs and Koni adjustable shocks and struts. I have to say, overall, I’m very pleased. The new setup makes the car handle and look a lot better. The ride is noticibly rougher, but it’s not harsh by any means. Some bumps can be pretty loud, but overall it’s just fine.

I’ve been in school for the last 2 1/2 months, and that’s been nothing really special. Calculus and Human Anatomy, oh boy! Yeah, you know you’re jealous.

Been busy working on websites. Still working at SPARTA, doing the same stuff I have been doing for the last 6 1/2 years. Can you believe that?! 6 1/2 years at my first at only job, and it’s still going strong. I also made a website for my sister and her husband as well as for the Associated Engineering Student Council at SDSU. I also set up and maintain a European car forum called EuroTuned. If you drive a VW, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, or any other kind of European car, just come on over and join up, it’s some good fun. So as you can see, I’ve been managing to stay busy.

I replaced the photo album software that I created for my website with one that is easier to use and add photos to. So basically, you can expect many more photos to come. I already added A BUNCH of new photos, so just hit the Photos link at the top of the page to view them.

Went to a couple of concerts recently. MEST in early October, and Good Charlotte with Sum 41 on Halloween. All were good and I’d highly recommend you attending one of them the next time they’re in town.

For the last couple of days, my time has been consumed by Halo 2. Josh and I went to GameStop around 11:30 Monday night and waited in line to get the game he preordered. We ended up playing until 5:00AM before I went home to sleep. Then on Tuesday, FedEx dropped off the copy that I had ordered that included free overnight shipping, so I still had it on the day of the release because they shipped it out on Monday. We had our first true Halo 2 party last night. I won’t bore you with the details but just know it was pretty fun.

Also on Tuesday, I received a 20GB iPod, completely free of charge. How cool is that?! All I had to do was sign up on a website, complete an advertiser’s offer, and then get 5 people to do the same. It was pretty effortless on my part. The only downside is it took me almost 3 months from when I signed up to me getting my iPod. But, it’s here now, and definitely not a scam. I had already bought a cable that allows me to listen to the iPod in my car; and I also bought a little cradle that the iPod sits in when I have it in my car. I posted pictures in case you’re interested.

That’s about it for now. Erica’s on her way up to my house and we’re gonna go shopping for Robin and Jacki’s birthdays. Can’t wait until Christmas when they’re both home again cause I miss them a lot. Oh well, that’s all part of growing up I guess.

New Hottie Obsession

Yep that’s right … none other than the absolutely GORGEOUS Keira Knightly. Tonight I watched Bend it Like Beckham, and am watching Pirates of the Caribbean right now and GOT DAYUM she is hot! And the best part is, she’s ONLY 18! :D ROOLS:

Okay, that is all for now.

Oh yeah, and Pirates is my new favorite movie for right now. =o)

UGGGH!

Okay, you know what song is seriously annoying? MILKSHAKE!! GAH! I seriously hate this song, it’s musically horrible, but somehow I manage to get it in my head. It’s up there in the “MOST ANNOYING CRAP IN THE WORLD” list, somewhere between the whole McDonald’s “I’m lovin it” crap and any radio or TV commercial that takes a Christmas carol and makes it a jingle.

Okay, done with that rant for now.

Best Concert EVAR

Well, Dan and I just got back from LA after seeing Metallica. And I must say, it was easily the BEST CONCERT I have EVER been to. I mean seriously, when they came on stage, everyone was so pumped and excited and ready, and they got going and kept the energy up for the 2 hours that they played. Oh man it was great.

We also go to see Limp Bizkit play, and I’ll admit, it wasn’t all that bad. They played pretty well and rocked it up. The crowd wasn’t too happy with Fred Durst though; they kept booing him and flippin him off and what not. So all in all Limp Bizkit was enjoyable. We got there too late to see Linkin Park though. Dan and I were both bummed. It took us about 45 minutes to get off the freeway and find a place to park. Then it took us another good half hour to walk to the stadium and get seated. By that point it was about 6:50 and Limp was just about on the stage.

But in all honesty, we really went to this show for Metallica, and it was well worth it. I have no voice left and I can’t hear worth crap. So by all indications, it was an awesome show. =o)

The trip up there was interesting because we had mad traffic the WHOLE WAY UP. I couldn’t understand it. There were several times when we were completely stopped on the freeway (not including the 20 minutes we spent in line to exit the freeway at the stadium. And then the trip home was fun too cause coming down the 110, we somehow missed the exit for the 405 and ended up in San Pedro, which was about 5-6 miles south of where we wanted to be. But we made it worth our while cause we found a 7-11 and stocked up on Gatorade and candy bars and M&M’s. So it wasn’t a complete wash.

Oh, I might also add that my GPS is soo cool. Cause when we finally got onto the 405, I looked at the route that I had planned out, and it said I would be pulling into my driveway at 1:28 AM. Well, it was a minute off, I pulled in my driveway at 1:27 AM. How’s THAT for accuracy?

Hehe, anyway … I’m still thirsty and need to get ready for bed. But thought I would log this entry in, since some of you are interested in the site again now that I seem to be updating it.

With that, I say GOOD NIGHT!
