New Tint

So I had my 25th birthday a few weeks ago, and it was mostly a low-key affair (much to my liking :) ). Before my birthday, though, Jess got in contact with my family and organized a large joint gift from them. Everyone contributed towards giving me gift cards so I could get my car windows tinted!

I was quite excited and happy with that gift! Getting them tinted was something I had been talking about doing ever since I got the Jetta over 5 years ago; I just never took the time nor spent the money to get it done. With this gift, I had absolutely no reason not to get it done.

So about a week and a half after my birthday, at the recommendation of several friends on SoCalEuro I called up Expert Window Tinting Plus and set up an appointment. Their location is literally just down the street from Michael and Gaile, so we set up a day that was convenient for Michael and Jess and I went down and dropped the car off. Michael had followed me to Expert Window Tinting and after dropping the car off, we went back to their house.

While waiting for the car to be finished (I was quoted 2.5 hours, which turned out to be 100% accurate), Jess and I got to spend quite a bit of time playing with Keira.

We were so pleased to get to spend some time playing with Keira and she seemed to enjoy us quite a bit too. After coming home, Michael told me that Keira said, “John and Jess are fun!”

We dropped my car off at 1:30, and exactly 2.5 hours later, my car was ready for pickup at 4:00. Michael took me down and we walked to the back and my car looked great!

I can’t say enough nice things about Andy and the crew at Expert Window Tinting Plus! They did an excellent job and I could not be any happier. Andy is a very friendly, affable guy, and the work is impeccable. Andy made sure I got the best-available product and look I was going for.

I know from now on, I doubt I will go anywhere in San Diego if I need any cars tinted and I will be sure to send friends and family down there as well.

Anyway, see below for the pictures.

By the way, both photos above were taken using the High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography technique. I personally am not a fan of the blown-out “comicy” look of many HDR photos that are popular these days; I like the look of a well-balanced and more natural-looking photograph.

Seeing D.C.

So if you read my blog entry for UX Week – Day 3, then you would know today we had a field trip to the Smithsonian Institute National Air and Space Museum’s Paul E. Garber Facility for Preservation, Restoration, and Storage. Say that 10 times fast. We got there before the group and hung around looking at some of the stored aircraft until the rest of the group got there.

When they all arrived, we went on the tour. We got to see some of the old rare aircraft they have stored at the facility, how they refurbished the aircraft for the exhibits, how they build the exhibits, and we got to talk to some of the curators and those involved in the script-writing. It was an amazing experience for me, one in which I was just in awe being able to see something very few people get to see.

After the tour was all over, Steve dropped me off at the Metro Rail station just down the street and I took it into Downtown D.C. where I got off at Union Station. I got off the subway, walked upstairs and outside Union Station, and thus began my sightseeing adventure.

I started by walking across the street and ended up on the south side of the Capitol building. I talked to my mom for a bit while I was taking pictures and walking around. I walked up to the Supreme Court and unfortunately they were renovating the facade so the view of the front architecture was a bit obscured. From there I went around to the front of the Capitol and snapped more pictures, and just taking in the significance of just what I was standing in front of.

I tried to go to the National Air and Space Museum, but they have early hours and closed at 5:30PM (it was 5:50 by the time I got to it). I was a bit bummed, but moved on. I was getting pretty thirsty so I went across to the street to a refreshment stand. A word of advice for the rest of you: if you’re going to D.C., bring your own drinks. Just a lemonade and a bottled water cost me $5.10 which is ridiculous if you ask me. I went around the back of the refreshment stand and sat at the tables they have back there. There were a bunch of squirrels running around, and one was in the trash can digging around. He came back up to the top of the can and began chowing down on a french fry that was about as big as he was.

I continued down the National Mall, taking pictures of the Smithsonian Castle and the Washington Monument on my way. I ended up at the base of the George Washington Monument and snapped some more pictures. I continued west from there and went to the newly-built World War II Memorial. It was commemorated in 2004, which makes it the newest memorial. I spent some time there, taking in pictures and also taking in the historical significance of World War II. I also took some time to reflect on those who died and those who gladly served to defend our country. I have the utmost respect for those in the military, and this only amplified that sentiment.

After the World War II memorial, it was starting to get a little late and the sun was getting pretty low in the sky, so I decided to head over to the White House and make that my last stop. I walked up the street, through the Elipse, and to the White House.

I’ve seen it a ton of times in pictures but just being there in person really hit me and the sheer importance of the White House and those who work and live in there began to sink in. Being in Washington, D.C. and finally being able to see all the National Monuments and Federal Government buildings really put me in awe of what actually goes on here.

By the time I left the White House, my feet were really hurting after having walked and stood for 3 solid hours, so I headed to the Metro Station at the Smithsonian Castle. Man was that a longer walk than I was expecting, heh. Anyway, I got on the train and rode it back to Rosslyn where I met up with Steve at the hotel and we went to Red, Hot & Blue BBQ for a late dinner. Once I finally got back to my hotel room I was beat, but wanted to download my photos and get them online because I know a few people really wanted to see them.

In case you haven’t seen them yet, all of the pictures from this week (including today’s sightseeing adventure) are in my Washington, D.C. – UX Week 2006 Photo Album.

Blistered Feet

So I walked the streets of Downtown D.C. for 3 hours straight today. After the UX Week conferences, Steve and I got lunch, then we headed down to Suitland, MD to take a tour of the Paul E. Garber Facility which is owned and operated by the Smithsonian institute National Air and Space Museum. I’ll go into more detail in another blog, I’m just too beat.

Anyway, I took some 325 pictures today  and have gone through them all and posted the pictures from today. I took pictures of both the Garber Tour and also of my own tour through Washington, D.C.

So, go take a look at the Washington, D.C. – UX Week 2006 Photo Album to see the ~70 new pictures from today.

You’ll get my recap of the day’s conferences tomorrow.

A Few Minor Changes

Just a quick note to let you all know I’m still alive here.

I made a couple of minor changes to my site. In the photos section, when you’re looking at an individual photo, the information embedded in the photo will now be displayed. Things like the Date/Time the photo was taken, shutter speed, etc are now automatically pulled from the photo itself. You may find some photos that don’t have the information, that’s because when I resized the original photos for upload to my site, I didn’t save them in a way that retained that information. I’m working on replacing all the photos on my site with the copies that do have that information in them.

Speaking of photos, I’ve moved a couple things around and added some new photos. I added quite a few new Scenic pics, and I also consolidated the different SoCalEuro BBQ’s into a “SoCalEuro” section. In addition to that, I reloaded all my Jetta photos so that now they’re displayed in chronological order, so you can see the things I’ve done to my car over time.

I haven’t been up to anything all too special lately. Dusty is home for a couple of weeks now. Hung out with him for a little bit already. On Friday, we (Dusty, Brian, and I) went to dinner at the Elephant Bar and then saw Dukes of Hazzard. Dinner was good and the movie was suprisingly better than I expected, but then again I didn’t exactly have high expectations for it. I’d give it 2 1/2 stars.

Saturday, I went to a Birthday bbq/pool party for two people I know from SoCalEuro. As is usual for bbq’s like this, I had a blast. In case you’re interested, the pictures are in my Photo Album under SoCalEuro -> Jonelle’s Birthday.

Today is my mom’s birthday. My dad and I are making dinner tonight and taking care of everything for her. Then on Saturday the family is coming up and we’ll have a bbq/pool party at our house. This is what summer is all about. =)

Nothing new to report about the condo, I’m planning on heading over there after work today to see the progress they’ve made this week and to get some more pictures. Brian and I have an appointment at the design center in two weeks to pick out our flooring and window treatments. So things are progressing, but nothing major has really happened yet.

That’s it for now, back to work I go and then to the store later.

Fun with Photography

Well, even though I’ve had it nearly 3 months, I’m still learning how to use my camera well and the proper techniques. So far I’ve done pretty well and do some minimal enhancements through Photoshop. Earlier this week, on Tuesday, we had a nearly-full moon so I decided to take a stab at photographing it. It took quite a few shots to get it right, but I finally got a good, well-exposed copy. There were clouds that night too so I had to wait for the right moment. That’s the great thing about digital cameras though, you can take all the pictures you want and delete the ones that you don’t want without it costing a thing.

Anyway, here’s the best photo I got of the moon:

Nearly-full moon - 07/19/2005

  • Equipment: Canon EF 75-300mm F3.5-5.6 USM Lens on Canon Digital Rebel XT
  • Exposure Time: 1/500 sec.
  • Aperture: F/8
  • Focal Length: 300mm
  • Film Speed: ISO-400

There were also thunderstorms all around San Diego last night and so I decided to do a little storm chasing. I headed out to Poway to get some shots and I would have waited for the storms to get a little closer, but it was getting late; it was after 1:30 before I left Poway. I got a few good shots, all taken with the Canon EF-S 18-55mm lens that came with the camera.

And Finally we went over to the condo today to ask a few questions about the process and we decided to go take a look at the condo itself, see how things were progressing.

Our condo exterior (patio/balcony is in the near corner)

Our (empty) garage

The front of our unit

Brian really wanted to go upstairs and take a look. I was sceptical because I wasn’t sure if we were supposed to and I didn’t want to interfere with anyone if they were working in there. I’m glad we did go up there though, it was really cool to walk through our own condo.

After going through the condo, we were walking back to our cars and that’s when it really hit me that we’re buying a brand new home and that’s when I started to get excited. We were told today to expect an October 28th closing date which still has us moving in right around Halloween. It’s surprising to think that with as much progress as they’ve made already that it’s going to take them 3 more months before we’ll be able to live in it. Oh well, just gotta wait it out.

Condo Progress

It seemed like everyone I told about the condo told me to go take pictures of the condo as its being built to document the progress. So, today I did just that. It doesn’t look much different on the outside than it did on Saturday. Really the only thing that’s different is the stucco has had time to cure.

Now that I’ve had a chance to look at the exterior a little better, I can tell that our building’s exterior will be in the “Tuscan” style. There were two other styles, Santa Barbara and Italian. I liked the look of the Italian a little better, but what can ya do? It’s not like any of them are ugly at all.

Each time I take pictures, I’ll try to make sure I document them up here on my blog, but I might forget from time to time. You can always just check out my Savannah Terrace photo album for any photos I add.

Hopefully my next photo post will show more progress happening.

Gettin back into the swing of things

Okay, I know I was only gone a week, but it was just long enough to throw off my routine and make things feel a little less than normal. I’m gettin back into it though, things are just as when we left so by now I’m feeling like things are back to normal and nothing’s different.

Been working a bit this morning and am about to make some breakfast (yes I realize it’s almost 11:00). Anyway, yesterday I slept in a little bit (till 9:10) which was awesome because I also fell asleep before midnight the night before so i got over 9 hours of sleep. I really needed that after the lack of quality sleep I was getting while on vacation. After I got up, I worked for a few hours, finishing the things I didn’t get done while in Minnesota.

Hung out with Erica for a bit in the afternoon which was good. We ate a little food and watched a little Scrubs on DVD. Then I went home and bought some tickets to the Padres game last night against the Cleveland Indians. The Padres haven’t been playing too well the past week and so with Peavy on the mound I was hoping they would at least win one. No such luck. Peavy gave up 3 homeruns, which is extremely uncharacteristic of him. They ended up losing 6-1 and have lost 6 of their last 7 games. I know the flu is going around the clubhouse and a lot of the guys are sick, so I can only hope they all kick the bug and get back out there and play like they did in May. Despite the loss, the game was a bunch of fun and we all had a blast. Hot dogs, beer, and baseball; it doesn’t get much better than that.

Me being the nerd that I am took my camera to the game with both lenses that I have for it. I had the stock Canon EF-S 18-55mm (28-88mm 35mm-equivalent focal range) and my new Canon EF 75-300mm lens. We were sitting in the upper deck, right above home plate, 1 row forward of the very top of the stadium. The new lens is awesome because sitting at our seats, I could zoom right in on the players batting and even the pitcher and they just about filled up the entire frame. I was a little impressed with the lens.

Got home a little after 11 and just basically unwound for an hour or so. I downloaded the photos from my camera and looked at them. I will say they came out pretty good for the most part. Anyway, it’s time to eat so I’m gonna go do that. [Kip voice] Peace out [/Kip voice]

I don’t feel any different …

… 22 feels just like 21 did. Heh, anyway, I just turned 22 this week. Had a rather nice celebration, mostly just with close friends and family. Erica took me to lunch at CPK and we hung out for a little bit after, then Courtney and I went out for ice cream and hung out some, and then had a family dinner with my parents, brother and sister-in-law, and Brian came over. We opened and consumed the bottle of Merlot that I had bought in Napa in February; I must say, it was quite good. (Just an aside, the link above is to the 2002 vintage, the bottle I bought was a 2000 vintage).

Lately I had been getting more and more into photography and honing my skills. The camera I had was a high-end point and shoot, great for most shots, but I was still wanting to branch out. So this year, I simply asked for contributions towards a new camera for my birthday. I ended up buying a Canon Digital Rebel XT. Lemme just start out by saying this thing is pretty damn sweet! It came on Friday, and naturally the UPS guy decided to be 4 hours later than normal that day. But it was a good thing I stayed home because I had to sign for it and I would have been pretty disappointed if I had to wait another 3 days before I got to play with the new camera. Since that didn’t happen though, no worries there.

When it came I quickly unpacked everything:

And went outside and started snapping some pics (click for full-size version):

Okay I’m sure some of you are wondering “I thought there were some big changes coming for creanium.net?” Well, don’t worry, I’m still working on things. I kinda had to stop because things got hectic at work and outside of work and I’m just getting into the swing of things again. I hope to have the overhaul completed by the end of this week. If you want to help me test out the site before I release it, send me an IM and lemme know so I can show you when it’s ready for testing. In the meantime, if you notice some stuff acting weird, don’t worry, it’s just an artifact of the move.

Lotsa updates

Alrighty … so some new stuff to post about. (I would hope so considering it’s been 3 months since my last one).

Okay, well since the last thing I posted about was my new sway bar, I’ll start out by talking about the car. Since the sway bar was put on, I got a new suspension installed. Nothing too fancy, just something that lowered the car a little bit and improved the handling, but didn’t make the ride too harsh. In case anyone is interested, I have Vogtland Sport springs and Koni adjustable shocks and struts. I have to say, overall, I’m very pleased. The new setup makes the car handle and look a lot better. The ride is noticibly rougher, but it’s not harsh by any means. Some bumps can be pretty loud, but overall it’s just fine.

I’ve been in school for the last 2 1/2 months, and that’s been nothing really special. Calculus and Human Anatomy, oh boy! Yeah, you know you’re jealous.

Been busy working on websites. Still working at SPARTA, doing the same stuff I have been doing for the last 6 1/2 years. Can you believe that?! 6 1/2 years at my first at only job, and it’s still going strong. I also made a website for my sister and her husband as well as for the Associated Engineering Student Council at SDSU. I also set up and maintain a European car forum called EuroTuned. If you drive a VW, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, or any other kind of European car, just come on over and join up, it’s some good fun. So as you can see, I’ve been managing to stay busy.

I replaced the photo album software that I created for my website with one that is easier to use and add photos to. So basically, you can expect many more photos to come. I already added A BUNCH of new photos, so just hit the Photos link at the top of the page to view them.

Went to a couple of concerts recently. MEST in early October, and Good Charlotte with Sum 41 on Halloween. All were good and I’d highly recommend you attending one of them the next time they’re in town.

For the last couple of days, my time has been consumed by Halo 2. Josh and I went to GameStop around 11:30 Monday night and waited in line to get the game he preordered. We ended up playing until 5:00AM before I went home to sleep. Then on Tuesday, FedEx dropped off the copy that I had ordered that included free overnight shipping, so I still had it on the day of the release because they shipped it out on Monday. We had our first true Halo 2 party last night. I won’t bore you with the details but just know it was pretty fun.

Also on Tuesday, I received a 20GB iPod, completely free of charge. How cool is that?! All I had to do was sign up on a website, complete an advertiser’s offer, and then get 5 people to do the same. It was pretty effortless on my part. The only downside is it took me almost 3 months from when I signed up to me getting my iPod. But, it’s here now, and definitely not a scam. I had already bought a cable that allows me to listen to the iPod in my car; and I also bought a little cradle that the iPod sits in when I have it in my car. I posted pictures in case you’re interested.

That’s about it for now. Erica’s on her way up to my house and we’re gonna go shopping for Robin and Jacki’s birthdays. Can’t wait until Christmas when they’re both home again cause I miss them a lot. Oh well, that’s all part of growing up I guess.

i promised!

Like I promised, I’m posting pictures now! I just added some of me and Erica and of our trip to Stix last night. It’s so great being able to take a camera everywere and not worry about film or anything.

I’ll be taking it to the beach today, and if I have time I’ll post those pics up today.
