Long Absence

So I realize I’ve been absent from blogging on here for a while (nearly four months). It’s been a fairly busy few months, both personally and professionally. Allow me to bring you up to speed on what’s been happening lately.

SPARTA

Since I last blogged towards the end of April, some things have changed in our project. The last I mentioned, we had decided to use Cappuccino for our latest web app project. Well, unfortunately, we decided against Cappuccino upon further review. It was determined that we needed a little more flexibility than Cappuccino can provide us at the time. We haven’t removed Cappuccino from any future consideration, we just decided to go with a more “traditional” implementation for this particular web app.

That said, SPARTA work has been somewhat quiet lately. We’ve just been making continual progress on each of our projects. Now that the sale of the company to Cobham has been completed, things have quieted down considerably.

creanium.net

The last few months have seen creanium.net mature quite a bit. As you saw at the beginning of April, I got business cards made up. I’ve handed out quite a few since I got them, so I’m glad I ordered them.

I’ve registered the company with the IRS and County of San Diego, so I’m legally allowed to do business as “creanium.net Web Design”. I even opened a business checking account, I’m moving up in the world!

I’ve picked up quite a few new projects in the past few months. I’ll do separate posts in a bit about each of the projects I have done.

Personally

It’s been a pretty busy number of months personally. At the end of April, Jess and I drove up to northern California to celebrate Reagan’s first birthday!

Brian’s Bachelor Party and Wedding

At the beginning of June, a bunch of us guys went on a 4-day, 3-night Bachelor Party cruise in honor of my old roommate and best friend, Brian. We sailed on the Carnival Elation from San Diego. We were supposed to dock in Ensanada, but because of Swine Flu concerns, we went to Catalina Island instead. To sum it up, we had a blast! I’m still working on getting the photos posted.

Brian got married at the end of June and I had the honor and pleasure of being his Best Man. It was a beautiful and fun beach wedding in Dana Point. Photos have been posted so feel free to take a look!

This was the first of five weddings we have been invited to this year, so the fun was just beginning.

Minnesota

July gave us no reprieve from the busyness. We spent the 4th of July up in Riverside with Jess’s family and then watched the fireworks at Mt. Rubidoux.

In mid–July the whole family (Jess included) headed to Minnesota for my cousin Danika’s wedding (2nd of 5). As expected, we all had a great time out there and it didn’t last nearly as long as it should have. I could have used another 2 or 3 days out there. The wedding was a ton of fun and it was great being up in Minnesota again. Oh, and Jess’s highlight of the entire trip? The hour we spent at the Mall of America right before our flight home.

August

That brings us to August, which I cannot believe is just about half over already. This is probably our busiest month by far. It started off on the 1st with us celebrating Keira’s 3rd birthday with the annual party at my parent’s house. As always, it was a ton of fun with all the kids.

The following weekend was booked. Gaile’s (my sister-in-law) parents celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary with a party down at Michael and Gaile’s. But because we already had plans to attend a wedding that night (our 3rd of 5), we could only stay at the party for about 2 hours before heading downtown to Jess’s friend Stephanie’s wedding.

That wedding was a ton of fun, well probably too much fun for my own good if you catch my drift. ;)

My mom celebrated her 60th birthday this past Tuesday. We hosted the immediate family (well minus Mary) for a great birthday dinner in my mom’s honor. And we’re headed to my parents’ tomorrow for more celebrating.

Weight Loss

Around the middle of June, I realized that I had had enough and the excuses weren’t working anymore and I needed to start losing weight again. So I started eating better and using My Food Diary again, and then began riding my bike again and hitting the gym. So far I’ve been able to stay on top of it for the most part and I’ve lost nearly 20 pounds. Given my history, that’s quite an accomplishment in itself.

Now

So now you’re all caught up on my happening in the last few months. I may have left a few things out, not on purpose, just there’s been so much going on that I may have forgotten a few things.

I have a few articles for which I have ideas, I just need to write them out. So look for more articles in the coming days and weeks as I get them knocked out.

Subscribe to Updates

Just wanted to give a quick reminder that there are several ways you can subscribe to updates to creanium.net.

I’ve just recently added a “Subscribe to Updates” section that will allow you to enter your email address and get emailed whenever I post a new blog entry. (Don’t worry, I am very anti-spam, so only I will have your email address, it will not be shared and I won’t be sending you any direct email). You can find it under Subscribe to Updates to the right in the sidebar.

As always if you use an RSS feed reader, you can subscribe to RSS updates by clicking the subscribe link in the sidebar in the “Stay up to Date” section.

creanium.net is now proudly hosted by HostGator (bye bye 1and1)

In short, HostGator is light years beyond 1and1 in every respect.

As soon as I signed up with HostGator, I was sent an invoice. I paid it through PayPal and within 5 minutes I had all the credentials I needed to get in and start administering the site.

For security reasons, SSH access is disabled by default. So from CPanel, I just had to request an SSH be turned on for my account. It was an easy, quick, and painless process as a ticket was created for my request. I kid you not, within 7 minutes of my request, I had an email informing me that the account was enabled and instructions on how to log in.

HostGator is such a breath of fresh air compared to my dealings with 1and1. In fact, let’s compare HostGator to 1and1 real quick. HostGator handled my ticket within 7 minutes. I submitted a help request to 1and1 5 hours ago, and I still have not heard anything about it.

The biggest hurdle with HostGator has been getting familiar with their architecture, but I’m over that hurdle now and all my sites are ready for prime time. However, 1and1 continues to drag their feet and not all the sites are pointing to HostGator yet. I guess in just 24 hours of dealing with HostGator, I’m already spoiled and expect other companies to act the same way.

Why I’m leaving 1and1 (1&1) (aka 1and1 sucks)

So I’ve been with 1and1 for the last 5 years and they were pretty good up until recently. It seems they’re overloading all their servers and not caring about it. (For those that know what this means, I SSH in and look at the server loads and the server is usually reporting load averages in the 80-100.0 range)

I’ve tried numerous times to get them to move me to a new server or to find the offending sites and keep their server loads under control. Their typical response is, “We can pull your site up within 2-3 seconds so all appears to be well on our end”

Just today, I tried to pull up my site and look at the screenshot of the following load times:

1and1 slow load time

In case the image isn’t clear, it took my site 18.8 seconds to load; that is utterly unacceptable! You should also be able to notice that anything NOT hosted by 1and1 (those not coming from creanium.net) is what’s loaded so quickly. The Flickr photos only took about 150-200ms each, whereas a simple 275 BYTE image took 5.51 seconds to load from my 1and1-hosted server. I’m quite happy to be paying for my 50 byte-per-second hosting service.

I’ve decided to let my wallet do the talking and I’m leaving 1and1. I’m also taking 2 other hosting packages with me that I had set up with 1and1 and I will steer all future customers far away from 1and1.

I’m currently looking for a new hosting provider so if anyone has any recommendations, I’m open to ideas.

New Beginnings

A new nephew, a shift in time, and now a brand new website; apparently I’m all about change right now!

As you can tell, I’ve just launched the new creanium.net!  I built the new theme entirely from scratch, that way I knew it was as clean as possible.  The previous them I had was just the default Wordpress theme adapted for my style.

I focused a lot of my time on the photo section of the site, so feel free to take a look through there.  I think you’ll find it much easier to navigate and find other photos.

One of the other things I focused on with this new design is linking things together, either through tags or categories.  You’ll notice that tags and categories are more prominent in the sidebar, both for posts and photos.

Enough rambling, I think the best way to really appreciate the design is to use the site for yourself, so feel free to take a look and browse.  If you have any problems or questions, feel free to contact me.

Scratch that …

So after working on the new design, I’ve decided to scratch it. It’s just a little bit too dark and heavy and I want something a bit lighter and not so industrial-looking. The design I already had was a bit dark and dismal and had a rather flat color scheme. Just a lot of grays and steel blues, and I was never quite perfectly happy with what I had.

Let’s try this again …

New creanium.net Teaser

I’ve been able to make pretty good progress on the creanium.net redesign. So, here’s a little teaser …

More to come …

Rebranding

So the time has come for a redesign and rebranding effort. Creanium.net has been active in its current iteration for nearly two and a half years and it’s getting a bit long in the tooth.

With that said, I will be actively working on redesigning this website. I am also going to try to give my blog and writings a scope and stick to it and not just have random ramblings up here. This should help keep it a little more active as I write articles and opinions about the web and web design.

But then again, we all know what they say about opinions …

New Site Up!

Well, if you’re reading this, I’m sure you’ve noticed that I’ve put up my new site. I’m using WordPress and it’s awesome. I love all the plugins available for it and it’s so easy to manage and set up.

So as it stands right now, there are a few things left to cover. I don’t have all the pictures posted that I’ve wanted to put up; I’m working on that. I’m also planning on writing up some release notes so you know all that’s changed. But in the meantime, take a look around and just see for yourselves what’s new. I think you’ll be quite pleased with the end result; I know I am. :)

Overhaulin’ Update

Well I’m pleased to report that at this point I’m about 90% complete with the core of the site and all that’s really left at this point is to re-populate the new photo album. That is what will take the longest amount of time as I go through all the pictures, taking some out, adding new ones, and finally adding titles and descriptions to every picture.

I’m taking the time to go through each of my photo albums, taking out useless photos, and in several cases I’m completely removing albums that are no longer relevant. With the new release of the site will come several new albums and a complete restructuring of the albums.

I’ll explain more once I actually release the site as I will provide detailed release notes.

Stay tuned as the site will be launching in the next few days …
