UX Week – Day 1

This morning was the first of day the conferences at UX Week 2006, and I’ve got to say, it went really well. I’ll go through my day, so you can share what I learned.

9:00AM – 9:30AM — Introduction by Jesse James Garrett
As the title implies, this was just the welcome and Introduction. Nothing really groundbreaking here.

9:30AM – 10:30AM — Keynote by Steven Berlin Johnson
This was a very good keynote. Steven Johnson is a very good speaker and was very good at injecting some “industry humor” into his speech. He talked about his book Interface Culture : How New Technology Transforms the Way We Create and Communicate, which he wrote back in 1999. He went over what he got right and what he got wrong in his predictions. He successfully predicted the blogging revolution that occurred a couple years ago and is flourishing today. He also shared his observations of current trends and made some predictions about upcoming trends; and overall I agree completely with him.

10:45AM – 11:30AM — Understanding Your Content by Chiara Fox, Adaptive Path
A rather worthwhile workshop that gave me ideas about how to manage and analyze the content on a website, especially while performing a redesign. It taught how to look at the content, figure out where to place it, and when to throw it away or keep it.

11:45AM – 12:30PM — Business Objects: Enterprise Tagging on the Intranet by Don Macaulay
Again, this was a very good and worthwhile workshop for me to attend. It was a rather technical discussion, so I won’t bore you with the details, but I will definitely be able to the utilize topics covered in this workshop in my work at SPARTA. It gave me new ideas and different ways to look at some of the projects we have out there.

12:30PM – 2:00PM — Lunch
What can I say? It was lunch … The hotel set up a buffet with sandwiches, chips, and cookies. After we finished eating, Steve and I went out to the lobby to find some power to charge our laptops and do some work before the next session started.

2:00PM – 2:45PM — Creating Tangible Value with Design, Part 1
This session wasn’t all that informative or worthwhile to me. Maybe I missed the point but to me all they were saying for 45 minutes was “good design is good for companies.” They also focused a lot on the business aspect and making money on websites, which isn’t really what I do or use. There really wasn’t much in the conference that interested me or that I felt was useful to me.

3:00PM – 3:45PM — Architecting Government Web Sites for the User Experience
Well now this sounds like something a little more up my alley. Since SPARTA’s primary customer is the government, I figured that I would be able to learn some stuff here that I’d possibly be able to to apply to SPARTA work. Little did I know that as the speakers described their experiences with the government and the way the agency was organized that they would essentially be describing SPARTA’s organization and the way they work. So needless to say I was able to come out gaining quite a bit of knowledge and new ideas of how to deal with information at SPARTA.

4:00PM – 5:00PM — Magical Secrets About Thinking Creatively by Kathan Brown
Things really switched gears here. Kathan Brown is an artist who has been in the business for 44 years and she came in to basically give us guidance and a push to be creative. She taught us ways to let the creative process go on and to give it time when you’re trying to be creative in designing products. She had quite a few examples and real-world quotes from other artists that really gave me a new perspective on the deisgn process and how I should approach things when I start a design.

So all in all, today was a very worthwhile and meaningful day. I learned quite a bit and it is great to finally be shown and taught the latest in design techniques and technologies from the big players directly involved in the business and those that actually are closely following the web technologies and trends. Tomorrow looks to be another good day filled with workshops dealing mostly with planning and designing software.

After the sessions today, I went back to my hotel room for an hour after which Steve and I went to Ruby Tuesday for dinner. My first time there and I have to say it was pretty good. Nothing groundbreaking but if we had them in San Diego I’m sure I would go to them somewhat often.

Now I’m just going to continue work on my website, hopefully finishing it up tonight. I’m sitting downstairs in the lobby of my hotel listening to my iPod, so I’m feeling pretty motivated and ready to work. I also added a couple of pictures to my UX Week 2006 album.

Until tomorrow …

All Settled

I was very surprised as to how well today went, in spite of all the airport restrictions in place. Brian and I left the house around 4:50 (PDT) this morning, and got to the airport shortly after 5:00 for my 6:30 flight. There were very long lines for all the major airlines, but since JetBlue only had one flight going out all morning (the flight I was on), then I was able to walk right into a short line and only waited about 10 minutes to get checked in.

So I checked my bag, got my boarding pass, and then proceeded to get into the security checkpoint line. The security line was out the door and completely across the pedestrian bridge. It took me about 25 minutes to get through it completely, which isn’t all THAT bad I suppose.

Once I made my way through this line, I got up to the metal detectors and x-ray machines, unloaded all my stuff, took my shoes off, and walked through the metal detectors without incident. Then on the other side I had to wedge myself inbetween people to get my stuff all together and get my shoes back on. It was pretty busy.

It all ended up working out rather well because I walked to the gate and was standing there maybe 5 minutes before they started boarding people. I was at the front of the line and got right on the plane and seated. We took off about 10 minutes late, but ended up landing 10 minutes early. The flight was very uneventful and I just spent the entire flight watching Lost on my laptop and then on my iPod when the battery got low on the laptop. Between the two I was able to watch five 45-minute episodes total, so that passed the time nicely.

We landed at 2:20PM (EDT), taxied to the gate, unloaded, and then I just went to baggage claim to get my bag. On my way out of the airport, a guy standing in a suit asked me if I needed a cab, I said “yes.” So we walked out to his car and that’s when I found out that he was not your typical cabby, he was a car-service driver. Apparently he had clients that never arrived so he was basically just looking for a fare. I obliged and he ended up only charging me the standard cab fare, which saved me about 30 bucks. So instead of riding to the hotel in the back of a standard cab, I basically got chauffeured in a nice black Cadillac; all for the same price. Not bad I must say.

Anyway, got to the hotel about 3:15 and checked right in. Came up to my room, got a little settled, then walked across the street to a Burger King to get lunch. On my way back I stopped by a gas station and picked up some bottled water. Hung out around the room until about 7:30 when I realized I had forgotten to grab a notebook to take notes for tomorrow. I found there was a CVS Pharmacy just down the street, but they closed at 7:00, damn.

So basically this was my long-winded way of saying today was rather uneventful.  Oh well, at this point I’m just chillin in the room, watching the Redskins kill the Bengals in a preseason NFL game.

I’ve created a new photoset to chronicle this trip, so go ahead and check it out. I’ll be blogging more tomorrow and each day after the conference to share what I have learned and my thoughts on everything, so stay tuned.

All Packed …

… and ready to go.

Well, I’m set for my trip to D.C., now I just have to get some sleep in considering I have to get up in 3 hours.

Chances are, the next time you hear from me, I’ll be at my hotel.

Goin’ to DC

As some of you may know, I’ve been talking about the possibility of spending a week in Washington, DC. Well, looks like I’m headed out there August 13th – 18th. I’m headed out there to attend Adaptive Path’s UX Week; and also to attend some meetings at the Rosslyn, VA SPARTA Office.

Since I’ve never been to DC, this should be a fun trip for me. And the conference actually sounds pretty interesting (to me at least, heh).

So I’m sure you’ll all be hearing all about my adventures in DC during, and after the trip. Oh yeah and as usual, I will be taking and posting tons of pics.

Living out “The Terminal”

Okay maybe that’s a bit of a stretch, it’s not really THAT bad. We were supposed to have taken off at 8:30, but the plane that’s supposed to take us to Sacramento hasn’t arrived yet from Phoenix. So now I just sit here at the gate, typing this blog as I listen to my iPod. I got online through my cell phone just long enough to pull up my blog entry form. Yes, I’m THAT big of a nerd.

My parents are sitting across from me, watching I Love Lucy DVDs on the little DVD player my mom bought just before we went to Minnesota. It’s kind of funny because you can see them randomly laugh on occasion, and sometimes they’re laughing pretty hard.

It seems like this might be a pretty full flight; there are quite a few people sitting around the gate. But this is the seating area for 2 gates, so I don’t really know how many people are on our flight and how many might be on another flight at the other gate.

Now they’re saying we should be taking off at 9:15, only 45 minutes late. At this rate we should be getting into Sacramento at about 10:45 and getting to my sister’s by about 11:30. A little bit later than I had hoped, but what can ya do?

Just to find more to complain about, I’m still sick and keep coughing. I just feel bad for whoever ends up sitting next to me on the plane, because I’m sure I’ll be a hacking and coughing the whole way. I have cough drops, but they only last so long. Oh well, we’ll see how it goes.

Quick run down of my day: woke up, got my laundry started, went to work, went to lunch with co-workers, came back home, finished my laundry, packed, Erica stopped by for a little bit, headed to the airport, ate at the airport, and now I sit here waiting for our flight.

There you go, now you’re in the know.

It’s good to be home.

Okay, today was mostly uneventful so this post should be relatively short.

Woke up about 8:30 after sleeping in a recliner; it was actually quite comfortable (I’m sure the air conditioning helped too). Ate breakfast, showered, packed, and headed to the airport. The car ride was a little long because we literally hit stop-and-go traffic on the way up. We ended up getting to the airport with about an hour until boarding time. My dad dropped me and my mom off at the terminal to check the bags in while he took the car back to the rental place. That would have been all well and good except the rental car return was in a totally different terminal and he had to take the trolley back to the terminal where we were, then get through security to meet us at the gate, all within an hour. Needless to say we were all a little stressed about getting it all done in time. It all worked out in the end and dad made it in time. The only thing worth mentioning is we decided to get something to eat, but as we were eating they started boarding the plane 15 minutes early; so that kind of added to the stress.

Got on the plane, watched Scrubs for 3 hours and then just sat and watched the scenery. We landed, got our bags, my brother picked us up and to home we went. We got home and I barely got settled when my mom sent me to the store. I kid you not, I was sent to the store within 15 minutes of being home. But it was worth it because we ended up having a good steak dinner with scalloped potatoes.

Now, here I am, unpacking and resting while watching the Padres trying to win it in extra innings. I’m thinking it’s gonna be an early night for me. I am very much looking forward to sleeping in my own bed tonight.

Minnesota: The last full day

With today being Monday and day 5 in Minnesota, it’s our last full day to spend here. We didn’t do anything major today, but we at least spent time all together. Got up around 8:30, ate breakfast and otherwise putzed around the house until about noon when we (mom, dad, Colleen, Maretta, and Chrissy) headed back up to Mankato and did some shopping.

After the shopping we went and bought some subs and then took them to a park where we met up with Sheila and Chrissy’s kids. We all ate our lunches and then after that I played in the park with Chrissy’s kids. We threw a wiffle ball around and played in the playground and just goofed around. It was so fun and it was honestly so cool just playing in the playground like a kid again.

We left the park after about an hour for Pemberton again and when we got here I played some Tetris with the boys then I took Christian out for a ride in my cousin John’s go-kart. We got back to the house and played a little ball before I took Nick out in the go-kart, and then took Christian out for some more go-kart fun.

Once we got back, we all got together again and went back up to Mankato and had dinner at a place that had like 20 different types of chicken wings. We had 3 different types: teriyaki, medium spicey bbq, and spicy garlic. They were all pretty damn good and a nice big beer complimented them nicely. The “medium” spicy wings were quite spicy. I would have hated to see what hot wings would have tasted like; I don’t think i could have handled that.

Now, I sit in the living room watching “The Longest Day” while talking to Erica and Clare and Brian online. “The Longest Day” is a pretty good movie, made back in 1962 about the D-Day invasion. It’s being shown today because it’s the 61st anniversary of the invasion. The movie is pretty well done and gives you a real idea of what it was like on that day.

Tomorrow I’m goin home. As much as I miss San Diego, I’m not fully sure I’m ready to leave here yet. I’m just having too much fun and it’s all gone by way too fast. I’m really happy I was able to make it out and spend the time with the family; it’s all been great and I love it up here. I’ve taken 921 pictures this week, so I’ll have to spend some time going through them and sorting them before I post them to the site.

Okay, for now, I’m done. It’s after 1:00AM here and I need to get to bed. Expect another blog or two tomorrow.

Minnesota: Days 3 and 4

Day 3 was filled with even more partying. I miss San Diego but am having an absolute blast up here. We all woke up and took our showers before heading back down to Pemberton where we had lunch at the bar. I got a chicken sandwich and I gotta say, it was pretty good too. Michael, Gaile, and my dad each got a hamburger and it was probably the best hamburger I’ve ever had. The meat was just so good and fresh, I couldn’t believe it. Jamie and Sheila sure have some good things going on at that bar.

After lunch, my dad, brother, and Gaile took Mary back up to Mankato so she could pick up the shuttle to the airport. That all went according to plan. While they were gone, the rest of us were back at Sheila’s helping set up for Megan’s graduation party. The rain kept coming and going and everyone was getting nervous and anxious not knowing what the rain would do. About a half hour before the party started, the rain stopped for the rest of the night and so we got our party on.

Partied from 4:00PM-10:00PM. It was another good time just hanging out and milling around with people. The karaoke machine got brought out and so the singing commenced. It was pretty amusing and fun to laugh, but at the same time I would never go up there and subject myself to the same humiliation; heh. Once it got dark, out came the fireworks (literally). My cousin John got out a big firework disk that shot up about 40 feet in the air and then exploded as stars. It lasted about 30 seconds and was freakin awesome. After that we pretty much packed up and headed back to the hotel where I just sat around and talked with my parents.

So that was all yesterday (Saturday), and then today was sightseeing day. We all got up, got ready, checked out of the hotel, and headed out sightseeing through Mankato. I got pissed/scared though because when we were parked and looking for a place to eat, my new camera lens rolled off the seat and out of the van and straight onto the asphalt parking lot. Everything checked out okay but I was mad at myself for being so careless. In our driving around, we saw the house my dad grew up in, my mom’s old house, the church in which they were married, and even the school they were attending when they met. We also headed out to the Rapidan Dam and got some good photos. While we were at the dam, some thunderstorms started building and popping up, so we thought that would be a good time to do some storm chasing. We ran into a pretty decent storm and got some good pictures. No real lightning though, but a lot of rain and wind, so that was cool at least.

Once we finished our sightseeing, we headed up to the cities and dropped Michael and Gaile off at the airport (Michael just now called me to tell me that they arrived in San Diego just fine, so all’s well). We headed back down to Pemberton after the airport where we all just hung out and played some Rummy Royal (also sometimes called Tripoli). Afterwards I spent over a half hour on the phone with Courtney just talking and catching up. I wanted some peace and quiet while I talked to her because there were so many people in the house it was difficult to find a quiet spot. I ended up just sitting in the car because I was afraid of the mosquitos eating me alive. At this moment I have no less than 8 mosquitos bites, the majority of which are itching me quite badly.

So now, here I sit, in a very dark kitchen finally getting tired so I’m gonna wrap this up and get to bed.

Minnesota: Day 2

Yet another good day here in the midwest. Even though I didn’t sleep very well, I felt refreshed enough when I woke up at 8:30. Got up, did a little work, got dressed, and met Michael and Gaile for breakfast at their hotel. In case you might care, I got three slices of a cinnamon french toast roll; it was actually pretty darn good.

After breakfast we headed out to the cemetary where my grandparents (dad’s parents) are buried. The Creans have a pretty big monument because my grandfather’s side of the family is all buried there, and rumor has it my grandfather donated the land to the church for the cemetery. Being out there was pretty cool, eerie, and sad all at the same time. It was rather pleasing seeing my grandmother’s grave well-kept and not forgotten. My sister laid some carnations on the headstone and we all got a chance to pay our respects.

After the cemetery, we headed down to the farm where my dad and his brother grew up. We also drove by some of the places they used to spend a lot of their time, like Lura Lake and whatnot. We didn’t really stop because we’re planning on spending a whole day just sightseeing on Sunday. After the sightseeing, we went down to my aunt Sheila’s house in Pemberton (town population: 246). Spent a little time at the house visiting, and then we went to the bar. My aunt and her husband Jamie own a bar in Pemberton named “Jamie’s Pemberton Pub” (clever name, huh?) ;o) So we headed to the bar a little bit before my dad and I decided to walk around the town a bit. So we spent about an hour to an hour and a half walking around the town. We walked to the Pemberton School where it was apparently boarded up and isn’t really used anymore. Then just walked around the streets (there aren’t that many) and ended up back at Sheila’s house where we met up with my mom and went back to the bar and got some food before heading back to our hotel in Mankato.

Got back to the hotel where we all showered (separately) and got ready for the anniversary party. The entire night was spent celebrating Sheila and Jamie’s 25th Wedding Anniversary. I gotta say though, my mom’s family sure knows how to throw a party. The party started out at the Bandana Brewery where we had dinner. Then the party migrated a little bit away from the brewery to the Kato ballroom where more dancing and drinking occurred. All in all it was a great night and everyone I know had a great time.

That brings us to here, me sitting up in bed again, blogging. I’m going to watch some Scrubs season 1 DVDs to unwind some more and save the 350+ pictures I took tonight to my hard drive.

Day 1 in Minnesota

Well, day 1 is complete and it was a good day. Woke up around 10:00 and laid in bed for a little bit before getting up and showering. So I showered, got dressed, packed, and then we checked out of our hotel and left. We had lunch at a Baker’s Square; I had the Tuna Melt. Then we went to the airport and picked up my brother and Gaile. We ended up circling the terminal literally 8 times before they got their bags and came out. Once we got them all loaded up and in the van, we headed out to the Mall of America.

To fully experience the sheer size of the Mall of America, you really have to visit it. Believe me when i say this place is HUGE. We spent over 6 hours there and still didn’t see everything there. We did some random shopping though, visiting some stores we don’t have at the malls in San Diego. Stores like: “As Seen on TV”, “The QVC Store”, there was even an Irish store that we spent a good deal of time visiting. We ate dinner at Bubba Gump’s and it was pretty good. I got crab-stuffed shrimp and it was quite tasty. My sister arrived shortly after we finished eating and we did a little more shopping and also rode the indoor coaster at the mall; it was pretty neat.

Then we left the mall and headed for Mankato which is a little over an hour south of the Twin Cities; and that’s where we are now. We dropped Michael and Gaile off at their hotel, and then we went to our hotel. There’s a TGI Friday’s just across the parking lot from the hotel so we went there and got some food and plenty of drinks and that leads us to now.

I’m sitting up in bed, typing this out as I am continually getting tired. We’re staying in a Country Inn & Suites where they offer free Wi-Fi which is pretty sweet. Tomorrow should be another good day because we’re going to head to the places my family grew up and then it’s party all night. Frickin sweet!
